This Week’s ESL Challenge: Applying For a Job in De Niro Style

/ Advanced, Intermediate, Pre-intermediate, Students, Upper-intermediate

Apply for a job after you did this ESL challenge.
Would you like to stand out? Why not send a video resume to your future employer – in English? In this brief post, you can see an example and make your own version.

In this video quiz, Ben (Robert De Niro), the main character in the 2015 film, The Intern, applies for an internship at a company. Watch the video and answer to 6 multiple-choice questions (the first one is really easy):

Task One: Put the questions he answers in his video resume into the correct order:
a) Why are you a good candidate?
b) What position are you applying for?
c) What else do we need to know about you? What’s your life motto?
d) Why would you like to work for us?
e) What might you need to improve on?

Scroll down to see the answer.

Task Two: Now, it’s your turn to make your video resume. Think about the questions above, think about where you could tape it (in front of a bookcase or a painting?) and find also some appropriate outfit. Rehearse in front of a mirror and finally, record your video resume.
MIND: Task Two will take way more than 5 minutes, however, once you are ready with your ideas, the video resume itself should really not take long (in the film, it’s less than one minute long).

And GOOD LUCK with your job search. I hope you will find and get your dream job.

Answer key:
Task One: b, d, e, a, c
