Appy Advent – Activities for Advent Time (Week 4)

/ Lesson tips, Students, Teachers, Young Learners

This is the final week of ELT-Tutor’s Appy Advent Scratch Challenge (See the Advent Calendar here). For another 7+2 days, you can discover a new animation, quiz or game, you can explore the code inside and create your own version with a video tutorial (if there is something new to learn) or an ‘edit’ version of the code (to put into the correct sequence and/or complete). Scratch is free online app (available also for download) created for kids to learn the basics of coding: algorithm, sequences, repetition, variables, etc. It’s a visual platform, so instead of memorizing code strings, kids can create animations and games by using puzzle pieces. For all those who love experimenting, this is the Tutorial section of the Scratch Team YouTube Channel. Good coding!

N.B. You can use the Scratch app online without registration. However, if you want to name and save your projects, you will need to create a free account. Use an avatar name. Once you saved a project, you can share it.

HOW TO SHARE YOUR PROJECT WITH EVERYONE?
When you remix any of the projects in this Advent calendar, a message appears on my message board. If you’ve respected the main rules of all Scratchers (constructive criticism, nice people, etc.), your project will be added to this studio: APPY ADVENT CALENDAR – MASTERPIECES.

#22 Penguins playing Ball

We’ve just started the forth week of Advent. Let’s have a rest before the big Christmas celebration. What about a ball game?

Instructions:
This game needs two players:
– the penguin on the left can move up and down with the keys ‘a’ and ‘z’,
– the penguin on the right can move up and down with the arrows.
– Touch the ball as many times as you can in 60 seconds.

Here’s the edit version:
Instructions:
1) Click ‘See inside’.
2) Three variables (Penguin Paul/Score, Penguin Penny/Score and Time) have already been set up. You need to code the first penguin: it moves up and down when the keys ‘a’ or ‘z’ are pressed and you can find here the sound effect and score change too.
3) Copy the code onto the second penguin. This should move when the up/down arrow keys are pressed. Mind that here Penguin Penny’s score must be changed.
4) Finally, put the code for the ball in order: The first part is about its movement, the second part is about the time.
Good coding!

As always, show us your version!

#23 Catch the present

It’s raining presents! Catch as many as you can:

Instructions: Click onto the Green Flag and use the left/right arrow buttons to move Ben. He needs to catch as many presents as he can in 60 seconds.

SEE INSIDE

Edit version:
Instructions:
1) Click ‘See inside’
2) Tidy up the code on all three sprites. The variables (Score and Time) and the ‘Game over’ message have been already set up.

Feel free to remake it or wait until tomorrow and we’ll see the same game with levels.

#24 Catch the present – Levels

As promised, let’s see yesterday’s game with two level options – easy or hard:

Instructions: Click onto the Green Flag, choose ‘easy’ or ‘hard’ for level and then catch as many presents as you can with Ben (right/left arrow keys).

Here’s the link to SEE INSIDE.

Also this time the edit version:
Instructions:
1) Click ‘See inside’.
2) Tidy up the code of the present for the Easy level.
3) Create the code for the Hard level (no waiting time, 36 times repeated, -10 movement.
4) Then move on to Ben (three code sequences out of 4).
5) Finally, organize the code for Ben2 (only one sequence).
Does it work at the end?

Now you send us your challenge!

#25 Pick the Apple

Today, I’d like to invite you to combine different tricks we’ve learnt so far, from story telling, over random positions, to hiding sprites:

Instructions: Click onto the Green Flag and follow the instructions.

Feel free to SEE INSIDE.

Video Tutorial:

Copy or remake it: don’t forget to share it with us.

#26 Follow the Mouse

Today, I’d like to show you how to create a maze and how you can use your mouse pointer to lead your main sprite:

Instructions: Click onto the Green Flag and lead the cat to the ball of wool to play. The cat will follow your mouse pointer.

Find the link here to SEE INSIDE.

Video Tutorial:

Finish today’s challenge with your version. Experiment and share your final project in our studio.

#27 Reindeer eating carrots

Another version with sprites touching each other and an invisible counter (variable):

Instructions: Click onto the Green Flag and with the arrow keys, lead the reindeer to the carrots. Careful: you cannot touch the purple walls. Try to eat all of the carrots up!

Feel free to SEE INSIDE.

Here’s the edit version:
Instructions:
1) Click ‘See inside’.
2) First organize the code on the reindeer sprite: there are two sequences to clean up; the movement, time and final codes are in order. Mind that the variables (Time and Carrots) have already been set up, as well as the two messages (‘You won’ and ‘Game over’).
3) The maze is also a sprite, a created one. You don’t need to do anything here.
4) Move onto the carrots. Tidy up the code on the first carrot sprite.
5) Copy the code onto the other carrots. Only the position changes.
Good carrot picking!

Have you got a great project? Post it here.
