WUP: HOME-MADE PICTIONARY
November 2020 – Charades is the name of the box-version of Pictionary games. If you don’t have it at hand, you can easily make one with a Quizlet set and use it as a WUP exercise in your next ESL lesson.
You might want to start (= warm up) your (YL or adult) class with some game and doing so you might need to reactivate some vocabulary. You can create a quick flashcard set with Quizlet to do so. Always add 7-9 new lexical items to it after every lesson so that you have ready a set of words you want your students to know.
You can use this set as a list of words to play
– pictionary (to explain, draw or mime a given word to the other students, who can guess);
– 20 questions (a.k.a. ‘hot chair‘), where someone chooses one word and the others in teams can ask questions (20 in total) to guess the word;
– categorizing games (students make up categories for the words chosen, they can have total freedom in choosing any categories;
– a definition race: students in pairs need to explain the words to their partners and the partners have to guess, wins who explains the most words in 1 minute;
You can also turn it into a mono- or bilingual wordlist and share the link with your students. This way, they can go through all the learning activities (Learn, Write, Spell, Test, Match, Gravity) in order to learn the words, their spelling, meaning(s) and their pronunciation.
QUIZLET is described in THIS POST.
